What Kinds Of Insurance Does A Commercial Truck Driver Need?

If you are a commercial truck driver, then you might worry about accidents. You might not know what will happen in the unfortunate event of an accident, such as what you might have to pay or how insurance will work. Here is a breakdown of exactly what each kind of commercial truck insurance covers.

  • Bodily Injury Liability: this exists in case someone is injured in an accident. It pays for the damages that you may have caused to this person and acts as a legal defense against suing for damages. However, it does not pay for any injuries which you sustain in an accident. It generally has an associated limit per person and per accident.
  • Collision: this is used to pay for the repair or replacement of an automobile in case it is damaged in an accident. It can apply when a car hits an immobile object, such as a rock, or when a car hits another parked car. It applies whether or not you are at fault. However, your rate may increase if you were at fault, as opposed to being hit by another driver while parked.
  • Comprehensive: this basically protects you from damage unrelated to collisions, including, but not limited to, theft, natural disasters, animals, or fire. It is basically a safeguard against unforeseeable misfortune. It can be even more important for commercial truck drivers than others due to the bulk nature of cargo involved and the increased potential for theft.
  • Medical Payments: another form of insurance which applies regardless of who is at fault, medical payment coverage is meant to pay for the medical bills of any individuals injured in the insured vehicle, which is primarily you. You are probably required to have this insurance by your employer, but even if you aren't, it is an excellent idea to have medical payment coverage because it can help your health insurance pay for any injuries.
  • Personal Injury Protection: again, this form of insurance applies regardless of who is at fault. Personal injury protection can cover things such as lost wages due to injury or child care. Many states require this form of insurance, and it is a good idea to have because it secures financial stability in the case of an accident.
  • Property Damage: this specifically applies to any damage you may cause to the property of others, such as cars.
  • Uninsured Motorist: this applies to the unique circumstance of being involved in an accident with an uninsured driver. This results in needing to pay less than would normally be the case.
